A word with the opposite meaning of another is called an antonym. Along with expanding one’s general vocabulary, synonyms and antonyms are quite helpful in achieving a high score in various competitive exams.

The list of synonyms and antonyms will help you prep well for exams. Practice using these words in your sentences to understand which words fit in what kind of sentences. Keep scrolling.

Why is it necessary to use synonyms?

As mentioned above, synonyms are an important aspect of vocabulary. These points will confirm the same-

Some words are swapped out for synonyms because they are vague and quite basic. For example, “Burning fossil fuels is terrible for the environment” is a correct statement, but it lacks the sophistication you would anticipate from a higher-level response. Here, “destructive” or “harmful” would be preferable.

Another reason why we should use synonyms is to prevent monotony. For example, in an essay related to children, the phrase “children” gets monotonous after a while. You cannot interchange the terms toddler and adolescent because not all children are toddlers and adolescents. You might substitute the word with “the youth,” “minors,” “kids,” etc.

List of synonyms

Here’s a list of synonyms to help you prepare for your next competitive exam.

Word

Synonym

Important

Crucial

Common

Universal, Ubiquitous

Abundant

Ample

Stick

Adhere, Cling

Neglect

Ignore

Near

Adjacent

Pursue

Woo

Accurate

Precise

Vague

Obscure

Top

Peak, Summit

Competitor

Rival

Blame

Condemn

Opinion

Perspective

Fame

Prestige

Insult

Humiliate

Complain

Grumble

Primary

Radical

Relieve

Alleviate

Force

Compel

Magnify

Complex

Intricate

Lonely

Solitary

Small

Miniscule

Praise

Extol

Hard-working

Assiduous

Difficult

Arduous

Fragile

Brittle

Show

Demonstrate

Big

Massive

Avoid

Shun

Fair

Impartial

Attack

Ambush

Dislike

Abhor

Ruin

Devastate

Always

Invariably

Forever

Perpetual

Surprise

Startle

Enthusiasm

Zeal

Quiet

Tranquil

Expensive

Exorbitant

Luxurious

Lavish

Boring

Tedious

Respect

Esteem

Worry

Fret

Cold

Chilly

Hot

Boiling

Dangerous

Perilous

Only

Unique

Poor (soil)

Barren

Bad

Awful

Why is it necessary to use antonyms?

We need to use antonyms in language for various reasons, including-

You can improve your general command of language by studying antonyms and selecting the best word to use when writing.

Understanding antonyms can assist you in comparing and contrasting various ideas and organizing the language in your brain.
